4.0 out of 5 stars Works well, September 24, 2011

A few key points: these are genuine active noise canceling earbuds, not merely noise isolating (although they are that, too). That means that they generate "anti-noise" that cancels out ambient noise. In general, noise canceling works best with steady, low frequency noise, like the roar of a jet engine. It won't eliminate it entirely, but it will cut it down enough that you can enjoy music without cranking your player up to a dangerous volume. For me, it makes a long air flight substantially less stressful. It won't cancel high frequency sounds, so it won't help much with the crying baby in the next seat (although the in-ear noise-isolating design helps a bit), and it generates a low level of high frequency hiss (probably because the phase registration of the anti-noise can't be quite perfect). Overall, I found the elimination of noise to be about as good as some middle-of-the-line over-the-ear noise canceling headphones that I've owned.

4.0 out of 5 stars OK for the price, August 2, 2011

I've tried different noise cancellation earphones/headphones, overall, the headset is generally much better on the noise cancellation but you have to take the size.
As the other reviewers mentioned, most of the noise reduction of this set is from the isolation. The noise cancelling does make a difference, but definitely not as dramatic as over the ear headset. Anyway, considering a nice noise cancellation headphone is big and cost a lot more, I would still give it a 4 star rating considering it's overall noise reduction, sound quality, and the low price

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, May 19, 2011

I bought these to have noise cancelling audio on airplanes without having to carry the bulk and weight of over-ear headphones. I am very disappointed with the noise cancelling performance. The package claims to reduce background noise by 85%. My subjective sense is that the reduction is maybe 20%. There's a modest improvement when switched on, but it's subtle. My over-ear phones that are a few years old are dramatically better. The fit and acoustic performance of these seems average to me. I regret the purchase.
